What Does Homeowners Insurance Really Cover?

Your Home Owners policy is made up of six different components:

  1. The dwelling or your home structure.
  2. Attached and detached structures on your property. Such as decks, sheds, garage, pool house a garden shed ect.
  3. Personal belongings or contents. Items such as clothing, furniture, electronics, Tv's, appliances items of this nature
  4. Living expenses. If you were forced out of your home as a result of a covered loss this would pay those expenses
  5. Personal liability. Should you be found liable for an accident on your property you would find protection here.
  6. Medical expenses. This coverage would respond to others who may become injured while on your property.

Please take note that most Home Insurance policies have the same basic coverages however they are not all alike. Built within your policy you will find exclusions and limitations. If you have a collection of a favorite item chances are that your collection is subject to limitations on your policy and not fully insured. This could be a collection of coins, silver and gold, lamps, antique toys or guns all of these are subject to a certain limit.

There is no coverage for flood, war, earthquake, terrorism or intentional acts to your home. However flood and earthquake coverage can be added back by a separate policy and through endorsement. Theses are just a few common exclusions found within a homeowners policy.

Deductible: Is It Really A Bad Word?

Not necessarily! All Home Owners Insurance policies have deductibles. This is one way that you can lower your premium. The deductible that you choose will have an impact on how much you will have to pay out of you pocket before the insurance company pays you for a covered loss. However over the past few years with super storms just nearly missing us. Storms like hurricane Sandy and Irene who blasted the whole north east with epic rain and flooding, so much so that Irene is now listed as a top ten storm for our area!

Homeowners Insurance Policies Now Have Different Types Of Deductibles

Do you know what they are? Do you have a regular deductible, a named storm deductible, a built in wind deductible, a deductible with a percentage amount? Our team at Allan M. Walker Insurance Agency knows the difference and when they all are activated. Were they explained to you? The time after a big storm or a Nor'Easter is not the time to find out which one you may have. Be sure you know the difference and be aware of when they become activated on your policy. Our team can help you with that.

Will my Home Insurance Cover My Home Business?

Even though your policy provides lots of protection. Chances are your homeowners will not cover your home business. Now it does not mean that it cant, you just have to have a conversation with one of our team members. The homeowners policy in most cases will excluded business equipment and business property. That spare room you just made in to your office now loaded with business supplies, work orders and stock is most likely excluded under your Home Owners Insurance policy. Being in charge and working your own schedule is awesome however don't let all that hard work go unprotected.

We will take the time listen and learn what is important to your lifestyle. The roof that is over your head in these day is so much more. It protects your home, at times your business and most importantly the family... your family.

Just like New England weather we can not predict when the next super storm may finally reach us or when an accident may occur. What we can do here is help you prepare and try to make an informed decision, through conversations on what it is that is important to you.

Allan M. Walker Insurance Agency also writes Easton Homeowners Insurance, Somerset Home Owners Insurance and insurance throughout all of Massachusetts!
